Guild Wars 2: Designing a cooperative experience

PAX 2011: ArenaNet details its new approach to massively multiplayer online role-playing games, from scrapping loot drops to shaking up the standard party makeup.
Who was there: Various members of ArenaNet, including Eric Flannum and Colin Johanson.
Watch the entire panel whenever you please
What they talked about: This full-to-capacity panel revolved around ArenaNet's long-awaited massively multiplayer online role-playing game sequel, acting as a primer to give fans and newcomers and an idea of what to expect when Guild Wars 2 launches. The panelists discussed a number of different ways in which they are building a game that is meant to be played with others and how much more beneficial it will be when cooperating with friends or strangers in the long run.
While Guild Wars 2 does, in fact, have a single-player story campaign, the entire world changes based on the actions of the population. What happens in the world today may drastically change future events. Noticing that mission structures in other massively multiplayer online games would often have people competing against each other in order to complete the same objective, the developers decided missions should instead be cooperative and that everyone who is involved in any particular situation should be working with others to complete the task.
Mission difficulty will vary depending on the number of players involved. The term "dynamic" was used frequently to describe many functions within the game. On top of that, everyone who takes part in a particular mission or dungeon will earn participation points, regardless of what their function was. Be they healers, archers, or tank characters, every player will earn rewards for his or her efforts.
Regarding those rewards, gone are the loot drops that would often leave players with items that are useless to their characters. In their place, players will be rewarded with tokens that can then be redeemed for the items they want. Just like money, players can spend those tokens all at once or save them up and get the item that will really help their characters out.
Further discussion about the cooperative experience made mention that higher-level players will not have to create a new character in order to play with new players or friends. With the sidekicks system in place, higher-level characters will drop to a level matching their friends' levels, so they can still reap benefits and gain experience without having to develop a new character.
But the most interesting talk regarding dynamics dealt with the game's dungeons. One issue ArenaNet identified that plagued other MMO games was the reliance on "the trinity" of characters to complete a particular instance. If a team didn't contain the three--a tank, a healer, and a damage-per-second specialist--the likelihood of success was greatly reduced. In Guild Wars 2, the dungeons are being designed so that any group of five can tackle them and, in theory, complete them with little to no modification made to the party. Details regarding this were not too specific, but expect to hear more about this in the future.

Guild Wars 2 continues to
Guild Wars 2 continues to "wow" players, even with no clear release window.

Takeaway: Much of the panel was devoted to recapping previously announced facts instead of revealing new ones. And unfortunately there is still no word on when fans can expect the game to be released.

RangerPVP in GW2

It is a common fact that this ranger build is a bit of untraditional, because it will make an Torch and Axe to kill the mobs. What's more, we will make full use of them to buff our enemies by our features to maximize their potential. As long as you get used to this build and it will have a great impact. If your skill and selection in a right way, you will have the ability of creating your own burning combos to help melt down any foe you face!

how to provide a bunch of conditions which can produce high damage? arm your main hand with an Axe and your offhand with a Torch. Combining these two weapons, we can create our own combos because one of the Torch abilities is a combo field called Bonfire. Once you activate Bonfire it places a ring of fire around you that you can now combine with your finishers, the Axe has two finisher projectiles that will now cause burning upon hitting your enemy. Heal as One is a great heal because it heals you and your pet quickly. Also it has the biggest heal upon activation and is not a heal over time. Some may prefer the healing spring which is also a combo field that is pretty much an AoE heal for you, your, pet, and allies. If you plan on playing with a group and sticking together, this may be the way to go. As for the Utilities, we will be choosing all signets. In our Marksman trait line we will be selecting a trait that will allow signets to effect us in addition to our pets. Signet of Stone passively improves Toughness and when active your pet takes no damage from incoming attacks for five seconds.

There is also no damage to Marksman trait. Signet of the Hunt passively grants increased movement speed by 10% and when activated you and your pet will deal more damage. Finally, Signet of the Wild passively grants health regeneration and when activated you and your pet grow larger dealing more damage and gain Stability (immunity to cripple, chill, knockdown, launch, and knockback). I like to keep Signet of the Hunt on auto attack because it has the shortest cooldown and will almost always be up. For your elite skill, choose Rampage as One. This makes you rampage with your pet gaining Fury, Might, Swiftness, and Stability. Sounds all good to me.

If you would like to have your main feature lines up to 30 points into each with the resting 10 points into Nature Magic, Marksmanship and Wilderness Survival is the key. Going into the Marksmanship traits, we get a ton of Power and Condition Duration. In this line, grab Steady Focus that will increase our damage by 10% when endurance is full. Next pick up Signet Mastery reducing the cooldown of signets by 20%. Since we chose three signets earlier for our utilities, this will have a great impact on our build. And lastly select Signet of the Beastmaster. As previously mentioned, this trait is essential in that when you activate your signets they not only buff your pet but you as well. Wilderness Survival is up next and will increase our Toughness and Condition Damage. All of our abilities produce conditions so the bonus to Condition Damage is essential. Expertise Training is a good option for the first trait allowing your pet to do more condition damage. Off Hand Training is perfect for us recharging our off hand skills 20% faster and longer range. This trait is definitely a must for this build. Lastly, choose Bark Skin for added defense. You and your pet take 30% less damage when under 25% health. Last but not least is the Nature Magic trait line increasing Vitality and Boon Duration. Using our remaining 10 points, grab Strength of Spirit that gives 5% of vitality to power level.

Blue posts
Nethera -- We read these posts.

Does blizzard actually ever read these post or are they just put here and people just argue back and forth about topics that Blizzard has no intention of reading. I think this thing is an elaborate scheme to distract us. To keep us quiet and to leave the GM's alone thats why they always refer to the forums page.

We read them. We also allow conversations to take place without our influence when it seems that it's the better course of action. Sometimes our intervention can actually skew a conversation off track if we're not careful. Then again, sometimes skewing a conversation is something we need to do too, to get people "on track" or even away from non-constructive discussion.

Sometimes we just don't have anything we could effectively add to the conversation, but it may spark some discussion internally that we can have amongst ourselves or take to the developers and producers. If and when we do have something we can bring back, we generally try to. Some may be under the false belief that it was the constant posts about a topic that made us come back to the topic, when in fact we may just need some time to discuss and come up with an answer that works and sometimes, we may have an answer that we just can't share at the time. Timing in our roles is often everything and as many know, "promising" something too soon, can be upsetting or worrisome to some people, while others don't mind being "in the know" even if plans do change. It's a balancing act.

We don't have elaborate schemes. That would mean we have a lot more time on our hands than we actually do to sit, plot and plan. In most cases, when we reply to something on the forums, we're tightrope walking while keeping an eye on the ever so dangerous ps and qs. That's not to say there isn't a method to the madness (see above paragraph.) It just means, we have to be quick on developing our thoughts and typing them out in a way that (hopefully) makes some semblance of sense.

So minding that, Neth-blue-lady, if you guys see some awesome suggestion or idea do you generally keep quiet about it on the forums and just relay it back to your cohorts?

Generally, yes. If we see some really good feedback or ideas, we will often take it with us when we meet with the developers (which is generally a weekly face to face meeting.) We don't want to give the wrong impression that feedback given equals a guaranteed change based on that feedback.

ok but you can't tell us you're just as likely to notice a thread with 5 replies as you are to notice a thread with 23 pages of replies.

Yes. We are just as likely to notice a smaller thread as we are to notice the larger ones. Sometimes, the best conversations are on the first few pages (not to say we don't read through the entire thread.) The reason being, that often, the conversation is more focused on the topic at hand and as the thread lengthens, we either see repeat discussions/arguments, or it begins to expand to other topics that may not be as relevant to the main topic of the original post.

BTW, contrary to popular belief (and not to start a moderation discussion.) We do not delete threads solely on the idea that it's saying it dislikes something we've designed or done to the game. We generally delete non-constructive threads or repeat threads since they often don't lead to good discussion or split conversation which makes it more difficult for us to sift through them for the constructive bits.

Care to give us some insight as to why this is a bad word, blues?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We've reviewed our filter list and there are a few words there that should not be blocked as profanity; we'll be removing them in a future patch. Again, thanks for the report. World of Warcraft : The New Pet System

In his latest article, MMObk.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy takes a look at the new pet system coming with Mists of Pandaria, the upcoming Pandaren-filled fourth expansion to Blizzard's World of Warcraft. Pets in World of Warcraft have traditionally been for little more than show and bragging rights. I remember logging in for the first time in November of 2004 with my Collector's Edition in tow, and excited to pick my mini diablo, my panda, or my zergling pet. They didn't do anything. The panda was cute as hell but just slept on the ground while I fought. wow power leveling. All that is about to change when Mists of Pandaria launches and along with many other things the Pet System receives a complete overhaul.
